New works by Sła­womir Woj­ciechows­ki and Alek­san­dra Słyż each expand in their own way the pos­si­bil­i­ties latent in the tra­di­tion­al pair­ing of vio­lin and piano.

The evening will also be an oppor­tu­ni­ty to meet the two com­posers and hear about the orig­i­nal con­cepts under­ly­ing both world premieres.

Sła­womir Woj­ciechowski’s Elas­tic Fic­tions is scored for vio­lin, piano, Korg syn­the­siz­er with vocoder, and com­put­er run­ning MaxM­SP. The com­pos­er exploits the unlim­it­ed pos­si­bil­i­ties of cre­at­ing son­ic idioms and mean­ings through an inter­ac­tive sys­tem made up of vio­lin, piano, syn­the­siz­er, com­put­er, micro­phones and loudspeakers.

Alek­san­dra Słyż’s Sev­en Fig­ures for vio­lin, piano/upright piano and elec­tron­ics explores the rela­tion­ship between into­na­tion and micro­tonal­i­ty. The upright piano used in this work will be pre­cise­ly tuned in the sys­tem devised by the Amer­i­can com­pos­er La Monte Young in his cel­e­brat­ed The Well-Tuned Piano.
