The Fine Line

The Fine Line is an attempt to cap­ture the sub­tle inter­re­la­tions between a per­son­’s inner world and the con­tem­po­rary real­i­ty sur­round­ing them. The project inves­ti­gates the phe­nom­e­non of ecsta­sy induced by loud sound, com­bin­ing ele­ments of light, rave cul­ture and youth ideals. It cre­ates a link between music, art and social concepts.

The Fine Line explores the inter­re­la­tion­ships of shad­ow, lim­i­nal space, move­ments of resis­tance, con­flicts, mys­te­ri­ous dark­ness and the fleet­ing­ness of mem­o­ries. The expres­sion of sounds, at times approach­ing irra­tional noise, induces euphor­ic expe­ri­ences which are ampli­fied by pul­sat­ing light effects, under­lin­ing the tran­sience of the moment.

The project, a joint work by Angela Wai Nok Hui and Mikołaj Rytows­ki, began dur­ing their meet­ing at the inter­na­tion­al con­tem­po­rary music fes­ti­val “Impuls” in Graz, Aus­tria in 2019. Both are per­cus­sion­ists, and their shared inter­est in explor­ing con­tem­po­rary music led to the for­ma­tion of the duo in 2022. Their col­lab­o­ra­tion involves search­ing for new sounds using per­cus­sion, toys, elec­tron­ic instru­ments and var­i­ous objects. Beyond music, they exper­i­ment with set design, sound instal­la­tions, visu­al­i­sa­tions and per­for­mance, cre­at­ing mul­ti­sen­so­ry expe­ri­ences that rede­fine the form and pur­pose of art.

Angela and Mikołaj not only explore the son­ic pos­si­bil­i­ties of their col­lab­o­ra­tion, but also inves­ti­gate the effect of sound on the bod­ies of per­form­ers and audi­ences, on per­cep­tion and imag­i­na­tion. An impor­tant ele­ment of their work is light­ing effects, spa­tial aspects, audi­ence inter­ac­tion, phys­i­cal per­for­mance and open dis­cus­sions. They seek to cre­ate an exper­i­men­tal son­ic expe­ri­ence acces­si­ble to a wide range of audi­ences, depart­ing from stan­dard con­cert formats.
