Second:ary
We invite you to the Polish premiere of the Second:ary project, which was first performed in Utrecht in September of this year.
On 7 September, as part of the Gaudeamus contemporary music festival in Utrecht, Hashtag Ensemble gave the world premiere of the Second:ary programme, realised under the artistic direction of Ania Karpowicz at the invitation of the international initiative ULYSSES’ InSitu/City.
For many years, Hashtag Ensemble has been bringing contemporary music into unconventional spaces, directing our activities towards non-typical audiences, and valuing collaborations of a social character.
The Second:ary programme shares some of its ambitions with Inhabitat:Stalowa, which was performed at the Warszawska Jesień festival in 2022. On that occasion the ensemble gave a musical interpretation of the urban fabric in cooperation with children from the Pedagogics and Social Animation Groups who, under the guidance of Kacper Bartczak, created photographic scores and led audiences through the courtyards of the Praga district.
Before the concert there will be a conversation with Dalshad Hasan, a Kurdish musician living in the Netherlands, and Spanish composer Jonás Bisquert. Together with the musicians of Hashtag Ensemble they will talk about the process of creating the Second:ary project, about musical encounters with immigrants from around the world living in Utrecht, about the MuzikAz project, and about multiculturalism in contemporary music.

An outreach musical event organized in cooperation with a local community will be held in Utrecht in the frame of the Gaudeamus Festival.
Programmed by Ania Karpowicz, the Second:ary project will be performed by members of the Warsaw-based cooperative Hashtag Ensemble. Hashtag Ensemble musicians have been bringing new music to unconventional places and situations for many years. The ensemble performed in degraded urban areas, in a synchrotron dedicated exclusively to advanced scientific research, in a glasshouse of a botanic garden, in a Ukrainian refugee support center, etc.
To learn about Utrecht as a second home, we will be guided with small-moment stories by volunteers from the musicazc. Utrecht community. The participants don’t necessarily need to conclude their contribution with an essay, or a poem, they can come up with two words shared to the microphone, a smartphone shot taken in front of the grocery store, or just the sole experience of music making.
As a result of both workshops, recordings, texts, and photographs will be interpreted by Hashtag Ensemble musicians. The Second:ary pieces can probably be positioned somewhere between instant compositions and graphic score interpretations.
If mutually agreed, there is a possibility of making sound recordings with the chosen texts read by their authors, there is also a possibility to engage volunteers in the concert as performers. The final form of the project we leave to the dynamic of the cooperation between Hashtag Ensemble members and participants.
