-re: to the world
This time we invite you to a concert in two parts: the first will belong to the Danish formation K!ART, featuring Mikkel Shou, Hsiao-Tung Yuan, Rob Durnin and Joss Smith, while in the second we will hand the stage to Polish percussionist Julianna Siedler-Smuga.
Hashtag Lab is a welcoming home in which contemporary music resonates not only through the commitment of Hashtag Ensemble, but also of outstanding composers and performers from around the world — from Australia, through South Korea, to Norway.
At the start of the season, Hashtag Lab opens its doors to creators who, in two separate programmes — “-re” and “to the world” — grapple, experiment and play with the theatricality of sound, broadly incorporating new media into their presentations. If any of you have recently been asking yourselves what constructive contribution the introduction of digital tools to classical music can make, what possible paths exist for broadening the reception of contemporary music, and whether there are valuable proposals addressing the crisis of the ever-shrinking “attention span” of audiences, then on a September evening at Hashtag Lab you may receive a partial, but certainly interesting, answer.
In the first part of the concert, “-re” by Olga Szymula will be performed by the K!ART ensemble from Denmark. The composer places four live instrumentalist-performers as well as video projections in diverse settings and costumes. Freed from the burden of years of professional experience, the musicians travel back in time to the sources of their passion and original curiosity. “-re” investigates the re-experiencing of uninhibited play with sounds and the re-immersion in an initial passion for music. “-re” is also a joyful celebration of the individual and the collective. Actions on stage reverberate in the video and vice versa, creating further layers of “re”-interpretation. Diverse versions of reworked memories gain new qualities and new vitality.
In the second part of the evening we hand the stage to percussionist Julianna Siedler-Smuga, who will present the programme “to the world”, comprising works by Polish composers: Paweł Malinowski, Tomasz Goliński, Nina Fukuoka and Marta Śniady, well known to Hashtag Lab audiences, as well as classics of contemporary music: Frederic Rzewski and John Cage. In an expansive solo recital we will experience a combination of acoustic instrument playing with live electronics, audio playback and video, and the full range of new media will create illusions and collages composed of acoustic, electronic and imagined sounds. We will also hear simple sounds, close and drawn directly from the surroundings — cacti being played, the crack of snapping twigs, or the sound of a voice in plant pots.
Let #CURIOSITY unite us, inviting passers-by into Hashtag Lab.
