If you want to learn more about the artists/works:
Sébastien Beliah — Bassist and composer living in Paris and Warsaw. His work focuses mainly on improvisation and its relationships with various compositional traditions and forms. He draws equally from historical jazz practice — with Umlaut Big Bang — and from a deliberate departure from it — in Un Poco Loco. For 8 years he co-directed the Ensemble Hodos with Pierre-Antoine Badaroux, boldly combining contemporary compositions with his improvisational practice.
In 2018 he released his first solo double bass record, “Nocturnes,” a manifesto of refined double bass playing and a search for an ascetic form.
He is also fascinated by traditional music, in particular Polish music and that of neighbouring countries. From this fascination grew the ensemble Lumpeks, a quartet exploring traditional melodies from central Poland (the Radom region) in a contemporary way.
Sébastien has performed on the largest stages in Europe, such as Sacrum Profanum (Kraków), the Venice Biennale, Acht Brücken (Cologne), Le théâtre des quatre saisons (Gradignan), Jazz d’Or (Berlin), La Dynamo de Banlieues Bleues (Pantin), Angelica Festival (Bologna), Guess Who? (Utrecht), and D’Jazz Nevers.
With the ensemble Lumpeks they won the Grand Prix “Nowa Tradycja” of Polish Radio.
Sébastien is a graduate of the jazz faculty and from 2006–2016 taught double bass, improvisation, and jazz at CRR in Reims, and since 2024 has been running the “Młoda Akademia” workshops at Hashtag Lab in Warsaw. More information at the artist’s website: https://www.sebastienbeliah.com/
