Sébastien Beliah — Any Vibrant Entity

Fol­low­ing the release of his first solo album “Noc­turnes” in 2018, Sébastien Beli­ah returns with new mate­r­i­al of a dif­fer­ent character.

He con­tin­ues to focus on demand­ing and orig­i­nal explo­rations of sound, this time inves­ti­gat­ing var­i­ous forms of vibra­tion of his instru­ment. Ten pieces dis­play his expe­ri­ence and sen­si­tiv­i­ty, car­ry­ing with them a per­son­al poet­ics and the trace of the cre­ative jour­ney of a curi­ous and inven­tive musician.

Sébastien Beli­ah — Bassist and com­pos­er liv­ing in Paris and War­saw. His work focus­es main­ly on impro­vi­sa­tion and its rela­tion­ships with var­i­ous com­po­si­tion­al tra­di­tions and forms. He draws equal­ly from his­tor­i­cal jazz prac­tice — with Umlaut Big Bang — and from a delib­er­ate depar­ture from it — in Un Poco Loco. For 8 years he co-direct­ed the Ensem­ble Hodos with Pierre-Antoine Badaroux, bold­ly com­bin­ing con­tem­po­rary com­po­si­tions with his impro­vi­sa­tion­al practice.

In 2018 he released his first solo dou­ble bass record, “Noc­turnes,” a man­i­festo of refined dou­ble bass play­ing and a search for an ascetic form.

He is also fas­ci­nat­ed by tra­di­tion­al music, in par­tic­u­lar Pol­ish music and that of neigh­bour­ing coun­tries. From this fas­ci­na­tion grew the ensem­ble Lumpeks, a quar­tet explor­ing tra­di­tion­al melodies from cen­tral Poland (the Radom region) in a con­tem­po­rary way.

Sébastien has per­formed on the largest stages in Europe, such as Sacrum Pro­fanum (Kraków), the Venice Bien­nale, Acht Brück­en (Cologne), Le théâtre des qua­tre saisons (Gra­dig­nan), Jazz d’Or (Berlin), La Dynamo de Ban­lieues Bleues (Pan­tin), Angel­i­ca Fes­ti­val (Bologna), Guess Who? (Utrecht), and D’Jazz Nevers.

With the ensem­ble Lumpeks they won the Grand Prix “Nowa Trady­c­ja” of Pol­ish Radio.

Sébastien is a grad­u­ate of the jazz fac­ul­ty and from 2006–2016 taught dou­ble bass, impro­vi­sa­tion, and jazz at CRR in Reims, and since 2024 has been run­ning the “Mło­da Akademia” work­shops at Hash­tag Lab in War­saw.
