Dzień, w którym skrzypce miały dość
A concert inspired by the bestselling book “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers.
One day the crayons disappear from the box. Red is overworked after the whole season (fire trucks, Santa Clauses, Valentine’s hearts), blue is so short it has nearly vanished (all those vast seas and skies have taken their toll!), black is tired of doing nothing but outlines (black is a colour too!), and pink dreams of a dinosaur. The crayons would like to step out of their roles and finally scribble something completely different. That’s the book for you — which we’ll physically bring into the event and read aloud.
But surely instruments also have their very specific shapes, colours, and roles. Might they not grow bored of them? Don’t they dream of escaping their cases? Could the violin secretly want to be a wind instrument? Isn’t the voice tired of singing? What about the clarinet — doesn’t it sometimes long to sing? And the accordion. Always accompanying — but what if…
Free and playful explorations of stepping outside these roles will be made possible by the wonderful music of, among others, Béla Bartók and Eddy Flécijn, as well as the famous piece “Kolorowe kredki” by Wiera Badalska and Marian Sawa, performed by musicians and improvisers from Hashtag Ensemble. Colourful crayons will of course make a personal appearance. We’ll draw green suns, pink clarinets, and perhaps flying hares — everything you hear in the music and everything your imagination, awakened by sound, suggests to you.

About the series:
ĄsąBąble are performative concerts of new music for families with children aged 0–7. Each one is built around an original script in which listening to music, interactive play, and educational value are equally important. In a space designed to be child-friendly, audiences can hear music by leading contemporary composers in versions and proportions adapted for young ears. The theatrical format of the concerts encourages focused listening and allows sounds to cast their spell, while invitations to shared improvisation release the young participants’ natural need for expression. In the spirit of Janusz Korczak’s words — “There are no children, only people” — every participant is treated with respect and has a part to play in the event. The series presents exclusively music from the 20th and 21st centuries. A regular feature is the presentation of a recorded symphonic work or a piece from the sound design and electronics tradition.
Although each edition of ĄsąBąble takes musical texture as its starting point, it is also rich in non-musical contexts close to Hashtag Ensemble’s practice: literary, visual, and social. The events are interdisciplinary in nature: invited artists who have long worked in proximity to children’s imagination also take part — dancers, performers, illustrators, and writers. Theatre is a natural arena for new music, and so the ĄsąBąble series also includes actors’ preparation for the musicians as part of its educational character.
The series curator and host is Anna Szawiel — an actress and narrator who specialises in interdisciplinary cultural and educational events. She enjoys working at boundaries: between concert and performance, education and play, the physical and the abstract, always in dialogue with children’s imagination. The concert programmes are co-created by the musicians of Hashtag Ensemble.
The ĄsąBąble project creatively develops the concept of the “Smykowizje” series run by the “Muzyka jest dla wszystkich” foundation, within which Hashtag Ensemble and Anna Szawiel performed more than 130 concerts and mini-performances together between 2016 and 2022, searching for the most compelling ways of presenting new music. The concept and curation of Smykowizje was by Anna Kierkosz. It was the first series in Poland aimed at the very youngest audiences, in which contemporary music played the leading role.
