What hap­pens when your home, your body, your mind cease to be a safe har­bour? What is the nature of fear? Dur­ing this mono­graph­ic con­cert its var­i­ous faces will be explored by com­pos­er Nina Fukuoka.

On the sec­ond day of the AżTak Fes­ti­val, Hash­tag Lab will be trans­formed into a the­atre-house, in whose var­i­ous rooms three scenes will unfold: inde­pen­dent yet com­ple­men­tary stag­ings made up of musi­cians, props, live video and live electronics.

Nina Fukuo­ka will describe how the famil­iar becomes a dis­tort­ed mir­ror image (“Final Girl”), show what schiz­o­phrenic fear of being unable to dis­tin­guish real­i­ty from delu­sion sounds like (“Yug­goth”), and let us dis­cov­er how close love and hatred of one­self lie to one anoth­er (“On the Oth­er Side”).

Obses­sions, men­tal ill­ness, hal­lu­ci­na­tions and the warp­ing of the real world will man­i­fest them­selves in the rela­tion­ships of the musi­cians with their instru­ments, which will become sym­bols or tools of par­tic­u­lar processes.

That evening we will take a close look at the musi­cal nature of fear. The com­pos­er, draw­ing inspi­ra­tion from hor­ror film sound­tracks, video game music and opera thrillers, will search for an idiom of fear using a mod­ern son­ic language.

The mul­ti­me­dia char­ac­ter of this instal­la­tion con­cert was made pos­si­ble by Nina Fukuoka’s many years of col­lab­o­ra­tion with visu­al artist Izu­mi Yoshida.
