A Song of Humble Beauty

A Song of Humble Beauty — a documentary film by Anna Konik, who, wandering through the streets, bazaars, and workshops of Karachi, observed masters of traditional Pakistani crafts — dyers, potters, and embroiderers.

In an era of mass production of disposable goods, this expedition feels like a journey back in time. It leads to places where craftspeople patiently and with great mastery produce beautiful things. The film is, however, something more than an ethnographic record. Devoid of words, it is a visually rich poem and at the same time a cinematic meditation on the wealth of Pakistani culture, set to the purifying sounds of Sufi mantras.

At Hashtag Lab, A Song of Humble Beauty returns in the form of a hybrid event, combining a film screening with a performative sound installation in which craft objects become instruments. The musical action extends the narrative beyond the cinema hall, creating a space for dialogue between image, mantric sound, and matter. The film’s images — seemingly simple, repetitive, immersed in the rhythm of work — become a point of departure for an improvisation in which sound is drawn from objects inspired by the crafts of Pakistan’s Sindh region. Speech yields here to gesture, and story is replaced by experience. This is a first attempt to extend the language of film into the domain of live experimental music. Image and sound operate in close dialogue, underlining the processual character of the action and its rootedness in attentive observation.

The event, at the intersection of film, installation, performance, and experimental music, invites audiences to experience A Song of Humble Beauty as a living, evolving organism — a story that does not end on screen but resonates in space, body, and object. The performative section will be followed by a screening of the film and a conversation with its creators.
