Ąsąbąble: Akorduszki
This story really happened. Even if it happened a very long time ago. Even if it happened only in someone’s head. We will tell it to you through sounds, movement, shadow and… wind. We will listen to accordion music.
The inspiration for the interactive concert “Akorduszki” are James Fry’s works steeped in mythological themes: Odyssey Suite and Halcyon days for solo accordion. The miniatures that make them up are perfectly suited to a child’s perception, and their richness of colour, texture and dynamics deserve the attention of small ears. Between the pieces we will hear stories about Odysseus returning home, about Aeolus who gave him an extraordinary gift, about the Four Winds, each of which sounded completely different, and about Poseidon — lord of the seas. These stories will be illustrated on stage by actresses Natalia Leszczyńska and Anna Szawiel, who will invite everyone to join in. Together with them we will hum, make noise and bring the characters to life. Musician, improviser and composer Paweł Janas will guide us into the world of all the accordion’s moods. And the buttons, bellows, tuning reeds and registers will hold no secrets from you!

About the series
ĄsąBąble are performative concerts of new music for families with children aged 0–7. Each one is based on an original script in which listening to music, interactive play and educational value are equally important. In a child-friendly space, one can listen to music by leading contemporary composers in a version and proportion adapted for small ears. The theatrical format of the concerts encourages concentration and allows one to be enchanted by the sounds, while the invitation to join in improvisations releases the natural need for expression in small people. In the spirit of Janusz Korczak’s words “There are no children, there are people,” all participants are treated with respect and have their share in the course of the event. The series presents exclusively music of the 20th and 21st centuries. A constant element is the presentation of a recording of a symphonic work or one from the sound design and electronics tradition.
Although each edition of ĄsąBąble takes musical fabric as its starting point, it also abounds in non-musical contexts close to Hashtag Ensemble’s practice: literary, visual and social. The events are interdisciplinary: also involved are invited artists who have long been creating in close proximity to children’s imagination: dancers, performers, illustrators and writers. Theatre is the natural field of action of new music, and so the educational character of the ĄsąBąble series also encompasses actors’ training for musicians.
The curator and host of the series is Anna Szawiel — actress and voice artist, specializing in interdisciplinary cultural and educational events. She likes to work at boundaries: between concert and performance, education and play, physicality and abstraction, always in connection with children’s imagination. The concert programs are co-created by musicians of Hashtag Ensemble.
The ĄsąBąble project creatively develops the concept of the “Smykowizje” series of the foundation “Muzyka jest dla wszystkich,” within which in the years 2016–2022 Hashtag Ensemble and Anna Szawiel jointly performed over 130 concerts and mini-performances, searching for the most interesting forms of presenting new music. The creator of the concept and curator of Smykowizje was Anna Kierkosz. It was the first series in Poland addressed to the very youngest, in which contemporary music played the leading role.
The media patron of the event is the magazine Kosmos dla Dziewczynek. The Hashtag Lab Contemporary Music Space is co-financed by the Capital City of Warsaw. The media patron of the Hashtag Lab Contemporary Music Space is Dwójka Polskie Radio and POLMIC.PL.
